The Gold Coast is one of the most solar abundant areas of Australia. Blessed with approximately 228 days per year of fine weather*, a solar power (PV) system on your roof could save you hundreds of dollars on your annual power bill.
Solar energy is free and inexhaustible. It is non-polluting and environmentally friendly, so not only are you saving money, you are saving the environment. “
How solar power systems work
Solar power panels comprise many photovoltaic (PV) cells. The panels are mounted on the roof, which enables the PV cells to capture the sun’s light energy and convert it into direct current (DC) power. An inverter then converts the DC into 240V AC current, which is used around the home. Any excess power produced by the solar power system is fed back into the power grid or into a storage battery for use at night.
To encourage people to switch to solar, the Australian Government is offering incentives under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Purchasing a solar power system qualifies you for a number of small-scale technology certificates (STCs). STCs are calculated by the amount of electricity a system produces or displaces and so the amount you receive will vary according to the size of the system installed. The value of the STCs also varies according to market conditions.
The cost of purchasing a solar power system varies according to the size of the system, and installation costs. Determining the right solar power system for your home depends on several factors, including: climate, size and orientation of your home, shadowing, characteristics of the roof, number of occupants, and your usual electricity usage. The amount of electricity you can produce depends on how many panels are installed, how efficient the panels are, and the size of the inverter.
